Project Introduction
KFM & TFM fireproof prefabricated housing is located in Lualaba Province, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), approximately 175 km northwest of Lubumbashi. Constructed by GS Housing, this large-scale modular building project covers a total floor area of 12,928.65 square meters. The project utilizes 1,100 units of fireproof prefabricated housing and 800 square meters of steel structures, completed in two phases, aiming to provide safe and comfortable accommodation for mine workers.
The project owner is a globally leading copper and cobalt producer, holding an 80% stake in the TFM copper-cobalt mine and a 71.25% stake in the KFM copper-cobalt mine. As world-class projects:
-
TFM Mine: Covers an area of approximately 1,600 km², with 5 production lines and an annual copper production capacity exceeding 450,000 tons.
-
KFM Mine: Covers an area of 33 km², with 1 production line and an annual copper production capacity exceeding 150,000 tons.
Both mines operate across the entire copper-cobalt value chain, including exploration, mining, refining, processing, and sales. The primary products are cathode copper and cobalt hydroxide, with full-cycle production capabilities from extraction to processing.
Project Features & Technical Requirements
The core requirement of this project is the fireproof performance of the modular units, ensuring compliance with the mine site’s high safety standards. To achieve this, GS Housing conducted rigorous fire resistance tests on the container structures, wall materials, and overall design, confirming adherence to international fire safety standards.
The modular units incorporate flame-retardant materials and fireproof coatings, significantly enhancing the safety rating of the structures and providing reliable protection for worker accommodations.
As a critical component of the mine’s support facilities, this project effectively addresses worker accommodation challenges, improves local working conditions, and demonstrates the potential of modular construction in Africa’s mining sector. Its implementation not only strengthens operational logistics but also sets a benchmark for future projects in terms of technical and management expertise.
